Welcome to the United Methodist Union
The United Methodist Union of Greater Detroit is the missionary organization of the Detroit Renaissance District of the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Through program support, capacity building, and developing new models of ministry, the Union works to strengthen and revitalize our congregations and mission agencies to serve their communities.
United Methodist Union Executive Director, Rev. Dr. William A. Ritter
From Rev. Dr. William A. Ritter’s retirement dinner remarks on June 24, 2015:
Let me thank you for coming, for taking time to be here, with me, with my family, with each other, with “us.” At some time during the last 6 ½ years, “we” have become an “us.”
Early on, when I was asked what kind of retirement event I might desire, I suggested something small. After all, this is not my first retirement.
I retired from 40 years of local church ministry in 2005. I subsequently retired from five years of teaching at Duke Divinity School in 2009.
So I’ve been down this road before. But I understood the concern of the committee that something be done to mark this occasion. So I suggested it be held here at Metropolitan on the Wednesday night of a regular Board Meeting, and I further suggested that it be limited to Board Members, their spouses, other staff members, and outside professionals directly involved with the Union.
After all, you are my primary group. This is our regular meeting day. And this is our regular meeting place.
For the last seven years, we have navigated the river together, through quiet waters and over rough rapids. In short, we have a history. And because we have a history, we have a friendship.
